5 ways to naturally boost your metabolism

Everyone wants a fast metabolism. The faster your metabolism, the more calories you burn in a day (excluding those you burn during your Symetrie workouts!). But how do you boost your metabolism?

There are endless supplements and products on the market claiming to support your metabolism - but guess what, there are also ways you can give your metabolism a boost naturally, saving you money and effort along the way!

1. Drink more water.

Water temporarily speeds up your metabolism - yet another reason to stay hydrated! Studies have shown that drinking just half a litre of water increases your metabolism at rest by 10-30% for around an hour after drinking! This ability to torch calories may even be further enhanced if you drink cold water, as your body uses energy (calories) to heat it to your internal body temperature. We knew we loved a cold glass of water for a reason!

Another bonus about water: often you mistake feeling thirsty as your stomach indicating you’re hungry. So staying well-hydrated can help you consume less calories, as you’re better able to distinguish whether you’re feeling true hunger, or just thirst.

2. Sleep like a log.

Sleep plays an essential role in supporting your metabolism, with sleep deprivation shown to slow down metabolism, as well as increasing your blood sugar levels (and therefore sugar cravings!!) and insulin resistance, meaning your body is more likely to store food as fat, rather than using it as energy.

A solid 7-9 hours of good-quality sleep is essential for boosting your metabolism, as well as helping you make healthy food choices, and keeping your hunger hormones under control!

3. Prioritise protein.

Ever wondered what foods boost your metabolism? Here’s your answer!

Interestingly, your body burns more calories digesting, absorbing and processing the nutrients in protein than it does any other food.

This means eating a source of protein at each meal can boost your metabolism for a few hours by 15-30%!

Protein is also the most satiating macronutrient, so it will help you feel fuller for longer and reduce overeating - so pack a punch of protein into each meal!

4. Build muscle.

Building muscle has a positive effect on your metabolism, as muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does. This means, even if you skip your Symetrie session, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn each day.

Lifting weights, like we do in our Symetrie classes, can boost your metabolism, as well as burn fat and help you reach your health goals!

5. HIIT training!

Last, but certainly not least, HIIT training is incredible for speeding up your metabolism! The fast, intense bursts of activity required in interval training burns fat and increases your metabolic rate, for long after you’ve finished working out. In fact, the ability of HIIT to increase metabolism is far superior to that of any other type of exercise!
