4 ways to make 2021 your healthiest year yet

Happy New Year Symetrie family! We’re all so excited about the arrival of a new year, and the potential for a hopefully more positive, liberating year than we’ve just experienced. But the truth of the matter is this: 2021 will be as good as we choose to make it! If we are determined to make it a year of growth, positivity and change, it is in our power to make this happen.

So as we kick off this new year, it’s time to think about the goals and resolutions we can adopt to ensure 2021 is the happy, healthy year we so badly want it to be.

Do you want 2021 to be your healthiest year yet? Do you want to feel fit and strong, and comfortable in your own skin? Want to feel like you have the energy to conquer whatever this year throws at you?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then here are four goals to help you make 2021 your year, by supporting your health and happiness!

1.Cook more.

If you’re a top tier member of the UberEats support club, you’re not alone! Ever find yourself ordering takeaway simply because you can’t be bothered to cook? Bypass a fridge full of fresh, nutritious ingredients for a cheeky Deliveroo order? Take a trip to your local restaurant for a meal you don’t even really enjoy, if you’re feeling lazy or unmotivated?

We’ve all been there!

This year, however, commit to cooking more. This might take some planning, so be prepared. Try to set aside just 30 minutes each Sunday to roughly plan out what meals you’ll cook for the week, and do a big grocery shop for all the necessary ingredients.

A small amount of effort, for a significant reward…

If you have all the ingredients on hand and a plan of what you want to cook, this will make it super simple to follow through on your resolution to cook more. You’re removing the guesswork, decision making, and any barriers along the way.

Cooking more means you’ll know exactly what’s in your meals, and you can control portion sizes and ingredients so you’re always confident you’re fuelling your body in the best way possible. Sounds like a plan!

2. Move more.

As we know, exercise is so important for your physical and mental health. The benefits to your metabolism, heart health, insulin levels, hormonal balance - the list goes on - are endless.

But as we also know, when life returns to busy normality, often our workouts are the first things we let slide. When we feel busy with work, family or social arrangements, we find ourselves missing regular workouts because we just “don’t have the time”.

So this year, can you make the time? Don’t wait for motivation to strike, instead rely on discipline and commitment. Book your sessions each week, and add them to your calendar. Treat them like work meetings - you wouldn’t skip a work meeting, so why skip your workout?

Whether it means waking up just 45 minutes earlier to squeeze in a session some days, fitting in a sweat during your lunch break, or leaving work slightly earlier occasionally to hit the gym, make the time. You’ll feel so much better for it when you do.

Another handy tip is to mix it up - you'll continue to challenge your body, muscles and fitness by changing up your workouts. We've got something for everyone at Symetrie, from HIIT Circuits, to Yoga, Pilates, PT, run club and outdoor bootcamps! No excuses, we've got you!

3. Say goodbye to the guilt.

With healthy resolutions and a determination to eat well and exercise often, we can find ourselves feeling guilty and upset when we slip up, or don’t quite meet our own expectations of ourselves.

In 2021, let’s commit to banishing this guilt. It isn’t productive! It actually interferes with motivation, and can lead to further poor decision making going forwards.

Think about it… last time you “slipped up” and ate a massive burger with extra fries, when you’d planned on a nutritious salad for dinner, did you accept your decision and move forwards without regret, making the most of every bite of the burger? Or did you feel so guilty, you sat there feeling like a failure, and in your feeling sorry for yourself, decided to write the entire day off and finish with two scoops of ice cream and a donut for dessert?

When we fixate on our guilt, we don’t enjoy the treats we’re indulging in. It’s perfectly okay, even healthy, to enjoy your fave treats sometimes, and take a few days off from the gym. Don’t ever feel guilty for it! Simply accept when you haven’t quite lived up to your own expectations, forgive yourself, and use each meal or each day as a chance to reset, start again, and make healthier choices in the future.

4. Find things you love.

The ultimate ticket to living your healthiest life in 2021: finding a sustainable way to live a balanced life.

The key to good health is consistency. Every meal doesn’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to workout every single day, but the goal is to find a way in which you can eat healthily and move your body, and can sustain in the long-term.

To sustain this lifestyle, you have to find things you enjoy! Whether it’s finding a fitness class you’re always excited to go to, developing a recipe for a nutritious curry you adore and love to cook, or finding a guided meditation that helps you feel centred and balanced, discovering practices and things you love along your health journey is critical to your success.

A healthy lifestyle should make you feel free, empowered and energised. It shouldn’t make you feel deprived or restricted.

So take the time this year to experiment, try new things, and discover the ones you love.

Let’s make 2021 a year of learning, discovery, and self compassion, as we work together to be our healthiest selves in a way we can enjoy and maintain, for good.
